Storyboard Text

  • Introduction
  • Hi, my name is Marie, I'm 14. I was born in Novosibirsk, Russia and moved to New York a few months ago. After my father died, my mother tried to find a job that was well-paid, and after many failed attempts, my mom decided to move to New York and try to find a better life.
  • Hospital
  • The Street
  • Marie lives in New York with her Mother and her older sister, Ida (pronounced EE-Da). Her father died when she was 10 and her mother struggled to support both Marie and Ida. Her mother tried to find a well paying job, however no jobs were open. They moved to New York 9 months ago and Her mother started working as a domestic service worker.
  • Home
  •
  • "No! Mother, please don't go!" Marie pleaded quietly. "Promise me that you will take of each other," Her mother said in a calm voice. "We promise," Ida and Marie replied Marie's mother dies of a disease and only she and Ida are left to take care of each other.
  • The Fire
  • Ida and Marie are trying to find a job. While they are roaming the streets searching for a job, a stray dog follows them. Ida tries to get rid of it because it might have disease. Marie pleads to keep it and Ida finally agrees and they take it home, clean it, and name her Rose. Rose becomes part of the family and like Ida the most, however loves Marie with all of her heart.
  • The Graveyard
  • Ida finds a job at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. 'Even though the job only pays $6 per week, that's enough. Some people say that the work conditions are horrible, but it's got to be better than they say it is. They only took people who were over 15 to work there and in a few months, after my 15th birthday, I'll start working there as well so me and Ida would have enough money no matter what' thought Marie, waiting for Ida to return from work.
  • A fire breaks out at the factory. People find that the emergency exits are blocked or cannot be used. 146 die in the fire. A lot of young people die, one of them is Ida. Ida was not able to escape the fire through the exits, and therefor, burned to death as well as many others.
  • Marie gets enough money that was supposed to be her sisters payment and in her savings to organize a small funeral for Ida. A lot of people are sad and two days after the incident, March 27, 1911, Ida Brodsky is buried. Marie is now on her own with only Rose as a friend and family member. She sold the house that she had and bought a one-room apartment for her and Rose to live in. She is very sad and doesn't know what to do with her life.
