I brought home an invitation for you to go to the ball
I don't even have a dress to wear I suppose I shouldn't go then
"will you lend me this, only this?"
"Why, yes, certainly."
Madame Loisel was a pretty, charming young woman who was very upset with her life because she didn't have the luxury things in life that she wanted. Her husband, was a minor civil servant at the Ministry of Education.
Her husband comes home with an invitation for her to go to a ball, but she is upset because she doesn't have a dress to wear to it. Her husband tells her he will just buy her a dress to wear with he money he's been saving up.
Madame Loisel didn't have jewelry to wear to the ball so she listens to her husband and goes to her friend, Madame Forestier's house to borrow some jewelry. When she gets to her house she asks can she borrow one of her diamond necklaces.
Madame Loisel goes to the ball, but when she leaves she realizes that the necklace Madame Forestier had gave her is gone and she can't find it.
Madame Loisel and her husband ended up spending ten years doing hard labor so they can pay off the debt of the necklace instead of telling Madame Forestier that she lost it.
Madame Loisel ended up running into Madame Forestier one day and told her all the hard work her and her husband did so they can buy her the necklace she lost. Madame Forestier tells her that the necklace was fake and only worth 500 francs.
