Phineas Gage was a railroad constructor who was very dedicated to his work. While working, he got distracted and accidentally set off an explosion, which was usually used for blowing up mountains. Everyone believed he was dead, but he regained consciousness and started to talk.
Get out of my way! Ever heard of personal space?
Other workers around him were obviously concerned, because the tamping iron went through his cheek, behind his eye, and came out of his head. They knew they had to get him in a cart and take him to town. The doctor was not in their town so they had to go to the next town over.
The doctor determined that the tamping iron, in fact, did go through Phineas's head. The doctor was shocked he was still alive. Phineas was communicating, but coughing up blood and brains, The doctor wrapped his head up and sent him on his way. Phineas was never the same.
Phineas soon got sick and had many infections. While he got better, he had developed epilepsy . His attitude towards people was forever changed. He was meaner towards others and his friends before the accident realized he wasn't who he used to be.
Miraculously, he survived another eleven years, but died due to epilepsy caused by the accident.. Even though he had a traumatic brain injury , and the medical technology wasn't that great back then, somehow he survived. Phineas Gage is a science legend and continues to amaze scientists today.
