"My name is Charlie Gordon. I am 37 years old and 2 weeks ago was my birthday"(Keyes 672). Charlie has an IQ of 68, and is taught by Miss Kinnian (672). In order to triple his intelligence and become "smart", he undergoes an operation. "The operashun dint hurt"(677).
1) Charlie doesn't notice any difference since his operation, and he gets impatient because he doesn't think the operation worked (Keyes 678). 2) "That made me laff. Their really my friends and they like me"(679). Charlie still doesn't understand that Joe and Frank are making fun of him. 3) Charlie befriends Algernon because he realizes that they're more alike than he thought (683).
Joe and Frank invite Charlie out for a party, and he finally understands that Joe and Frank just laugh at him (686). "And all the time I was tripping because somebody's foot was always sticking out"(Keyes 686). Charlie was saying that the whole time we was there, everyone was sabotaging and poking fun at him. "I'm ashamed"(686). Charlie is regretful of the things he had done before the operation.
1) Charlie falls in love with Miss Kinnian (Keyes 696). 2) Charlie develops a superiority complex, and starts thinking he's better than everyone else because of his intelligence (797, 798). He isn't able to communicate with normal people (Dr Strauss, Dr. Nemur, Ms. Kinnian, etc). 3) After seeing the boy in the restaurant, Charlie decides to research ways to save his intelligence (702). 4) Upon Algernon biting him, he starts to see how little time he has, and how important it is (703).
"Algernon died two days ago"(Keyes 706). Charlie loses all knowledge he had obtained from the operation, and he doesn't want to see anyone (Miss Kinnian) due to his recent depressive state (709). Charlie decides to leave and start again. He reverts back to his pre-surgery self, including the naivete he harbored in the story's beginning. (711).
1) Too much of one thing is never ideal. Before Charlie's operation, he got made fun of by people. After, everyone called him a freak. 2) Ignorance is bliss. When Charlie was "smart" he was more negative, and thought more highly of himself, but not in a good sense. Before the operation, Charlie was positive because what he didn't know couldn't hurt him.
