Storyboard Text

  • OMG mom has been out late because she's working?
  • I want that fancy white umbrella. I want to be like the other girls!
  • Mom would never buy that!
  • Do you want to wait inside?
  • Our mother will be here
  • I think she forgot us
  • The narrator and her little sister Mona are chinese. They live with mom and dad. They become worried and upset when they find out that their mom starts a job. The story takes place between home, piano class, and a car ride.
  • Sorry I had to stay late again. But I got a promotion!!
  • Told ya she was coming!

  • The narrator and Mona take piano lessons with Miss Crossman. The narrator is insecure and the irony is she thinks a white umbrella will make her fit in . Miss Crossman gives the umbrella to her as a gift.
  • Mom she is hiding something!
  • The conflict is internal because the narrator is too embarassed and ashamed to tell Miss Crossman that her mom is late because she is working. Mona doesn't think it should be a secret. She knows that other moms work to help with the family too.

  • Mom finally picks the girls up after a long day and is excited about her new promotion. The narrator is not happy that her mom is having to work. In their culture, the father works and mom keeps the kids.
  • The dialogue in the car ride home is tense because the narrator is telling her mom to quit working. The mom recites a chinese proverb "one beam cannot hold the roof up." They start to talk about the white umbrella but mom crashes the car because she is a bad driver.
  • After a car accident on the way home, the narrator thinks her mother is dead. The resolution is when the narrator throws the umbrella away because she realizes that her mother is important.
