Compromise of 1850 allowed the southerners go up to the free north states in order to catch their escapes slaves. This began the tension between the north and south. Because the north wanted to abolish slavery while the south wanted to keep slavery. The north did not like people from the south being allowed to come up and take slaves back to the south.
I have a right to be here to catch my bosses fugitive slave because of the act.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin(1852)This published book about a slave who lives in the south and tells about the experiences that they face. When it came out it was very popular with the northerners and changed many people opinions about slavery. The southerners however did not like it and thought of the book as false. The northerners also made more protest against the Fugitive Slave Act after this book came out.
The South
Kansas-Nebraska Act(1854)This act allowed popular sovereignty in the states even if they were free. This angered the northerners who lived in free states because that would allow them to have slavery. This act also resulted in Bleeding Kansas. Where people from the south came to attack anti-slavery supporters and vote illegally in the elections. This event also resulted in fighting between them and also death to people.
Dred Scott vs. Sandford Dred Scott went to court against the because he believed he was a free man under the MO Compromise. The court stated that he is not a citizen which gives him no right to sue. Therefore the MO Compromise and KS-NE Act were considered unconstitutional. This angered the northerners because it would mean that their states weren't free anymore and would allow slavery.
No citizenship No right to sue in federal court!!
Lets invade a federal arsenal, take their guns, invade the south. and give the weapons to the slaves so we can end slavery.
Harper's Ferry(1859)John Brown led a group of people to steal weapons from a federal arsenal and to invade the south in order to end slavery. This event went all wrong and these people were hanged because of their decision. This made the northerners think of Brown as a martyr and the southerners became very scared. So they now want the south to think about leaving the union.
I vow to end slavery but to leave the south alone as new president.
Election of 1860Abraham Lincoln was elected the President and vowed to end slavery, but to leave the southerners alone. The southerners did not like Lincoln and believed he was evil. So then this event affected the south into thinking they should leave the union. South Carolina was the first to leave and there are more to go.
