Martín Bernal drove home to his family after being given a vacation week from his military training in San Antonio, Texas, at dusk. He drove on a dusty road toward his town in the valley of Texas. He was thinking about greeting his parents and going to bed without having to wake up early.
Martín saw a figure in the distance. His old Chevy got closer and he realized there was a woman stopped on the side of the road. He stopped his car, opened the window, and decided to take her to the dance after her short and sweet voice asked. He didn't know there was a dance tonight, but he heard an urgency in her voice and was captivated by her.
Please, take me to the town dance.
Martín was looking sideways at his passenger. She was different; she was beautiful and pale with penetrating green eyes and long hair with a long black dress that seemed to be of the previous century. He initiated a conversation with the mysterious and captivating woman.
My name is Cruz Delgada.
What is your name?
They arrived at the dance without being recognized by anyone. When Martin asked Cruz to dance, she developed a true face of doubt but proceeded to follow him to the dance floor. Cruz became confused with the rhythms of rock music and then began to cry and covered her face with embarrassment. Some people stopped dancing to observe the small drama, and some girls even began laughing and covering their faces. However, the band began to play a famous waltz of the previous century, and Cruz wiped her tears and extended her arms to dance with Martin.
At midnight, the dance ended. Cruz took Martin's arm and they left the dance, tired and happy. It was cold in the night air and Cruz started shaking, so Martin put his military jacket on her shoulders.
In the car, Martin told Cruz about his military service and his family. Although Cruz didn't respond to anything, she was listening attentively. Martin could feel her becoming sad again, but she did not answer when he asked if something happened. He saw a tear run down her cheek. Martin wanted to leave her at her house, but when they arrived in the same spot that Martin had found Cruz, she spoke, touched Martin's face, and left his car, disappearing into the darkness.
Thank you for everything. It was an unforgettable dance.
