I am Nya, and I walk hours a day to the pond and back to get water as our environment is very harsh and there is no other nearby water source.
The terrain I must walk through to get to the pond is arid, just like my home
" There was always so much life around the pond; other people, mostly women and girls, who had come to fill their own containers; many kinds of birds...herds of cattle that had been brought by the young boys who looked after them" (14)
A couple hours later, Nya returned home and prepared to make yet another journey to the pond.
"Take Akeer with you...she needs to learn." (20) She's 5 and will soon have to walk too.
One month later, the dry season came.
We have to go again to live at the lake camp when it is dry season for us.
I have to stay here, "Waiting for water...for hours at a time...everyday for five long months, until the rains came and...[we can] return home. (27)
