  • The drawing/lottery in “The Lottery” is symbolic of chances in life.
  • The character's name Mr. Graves in “The Lottery” are symbolic of tombstones and death.
  • Here lies Mrs.Dunbar
  • Mrs. Delacroix is religious and killing is a sin, so him getting the biggest rock goes against his religion (Christianity). This relates back into the bible when a prostitute was about to be killed stoned but then Jesus said whoever is free from their sins should throw the first rock.
  • The lottery in this story means chances of life, like the game of Russian roulette one bullet in the chamber and have 1/6 chance on dying like the lottery drawing.
  • Mr. Graves is the person who made the papers for the lottery and Graves has always been a definition of death. Graves are put after someone's death and Mr. Graves is the one causing death therefore, Mr.Graves can be a symbol for death.
