  • North African Expansion
  • King Fernando, are you going to expand our empire into Asia?
  • All I need is Morocco because it make me rich
  • No squire, I like Morocco and North Africa, that's all we need.
  • more North African Expansion...and the Gulf
  • I, King Fernao Gomes, am reaping the benefits of the monopoly of the North African trade routes! All I have to do to get the benefits is to expand and find new lands every year.
  • 1470s
  • King John II Takes Command
  • I'm counting on you to expand our empire to new lengths. We have goals and objectives in mind, have a safe journey around Africa.
  • I, Bartolomeu Dias, will not let you down King John II. I will unlock the seaway to India and expand our trade and influence to the East
  • In the 1460's King Fernando took over power After his uncle died. He was very rich and had a lot of power but used none of this to expand the Portuguese Empire any farther. He loved Morocco and the North African territories because they made money.
  • Vasco da Gama and the revolutionary voyage
  • After one year of traveling... (1497-1498)
  • I've finally made it to India and unlocked the East for Portugal. My three ships served well around the tough voyage around Africa. Time to go back to Portugal and tell the King Manuel. Too bad John II isn't around to see this.
  • 1460's
  • Under King Fernao, the Portuguese empire expanded a little more into the Gulf to territories such as Guneia as well as Ghana. During this time navigator Diego Cao started the practice of bringing stone pillars and a cross to newly conquered lands, which tied in the religious aspect of the expansions.
  • Way off Course to Terra de Vera Cruz
  • Look at this new land we found thanks to Vasco da Gama. I think we'll call it Terra de Vera Cruz
  • The Portuguese empire is rich and powerful now thanks to me, Manuel. Even though I did none of the voyages I reap all of the rewards.
  • This is the last step in the expansion before Vasco de Gama comes into the playing field. Bartolomeu travels to the end of Africa, effectively unlocking the seaway to India. This was in 1488. After this expedition John II dispatches 2 missionaries to reach Ethiopia. These people gathered information on trade and settlement which was also useful to Vasco.
  • The Riches of Portugal's Empire
  • John II laid a great groundwork for Vasco da Gama's voyage, with the chartering of Bartolomeu's voyage and the Ethiopian voyages. When Vasco made his voyage Manuel was King. After three years Vasco made it to India and back to Lisbon. The success led to another voyage which would mean something great for Portugal.
  • After Vasco's successful journey, Manuel employed another voyage to go back to India. Instead of going to India the voyage veered off Southwest and discovered Brazil which led to Portugal's biggest colonization. Before this voyage and Vasco's voyage, a treaty had been set up with Portugal and Castille dividing the East for Portugal to conquer and the West for Castille according to meridian lines. Their discovery of Brazil shows how this treaty didn't really matter.
  • Vasco da Gama's explorations and all that preceded and followed it helped to make the Portuguese empire what it was. It provided two big commercial circuits in Asia and in Brazil. From these places they garnered gold, slaves, precious jewels and spices. They also spread religion and their language to Brazil. Their success was due to many factors such as geographical location, their ship building capabilities, political support to expansion and the need to spread Christianity.
