Mrs. Mallard is informed about the death of her husband. Her friends are careful to tell her because of the fact that she "was afflicted with heart trouble". She followed with the expected reaction, "she wept at once" and hid in her room.
After looking out her window, she began feeling something strange a sort of freedom. "Free, free, free", she whispered in her room.
"Free! Body and soul free!" She cried as she ran down the stairs, overcome by some sort of happiness.
She ran down the stairs to the site of her husband, who had not died. She died from this shock, what the doctors called the "joy that kills". Little did they know that she died from the sadness of seeing her husband.
