In 2084, the U.S. was struck by a deadly plague only affecting those over the age of 18.
Left alone with no leadership, the nation's youth took control and formed their own governing body. At the plague's end, adults took back over 49 of the 50 states. New York remained in the hands of the youth.
Towns across NY underwent major renovations. Homes were repainted pink, the new official state color. Anyone found to be living in a non-pink home was fined.
When citizens of NY turned 18, they aged out of the society. From there, most were exiled to Pennsylvania, which had sunk into squalor during the plague and never recovered.
However, those who served as government leaders in their childhood or were seen to be superior joined the Alumni Conference, an elite group that lived in luxury in the capital, New York CIty.
When Emma Smith turned 18, she was excited. She felt that after scoring high on her placement test, she was guaranteed a spot in the Alumni Conference.
Her entire life, she had worked hard to prepare for the test. This made Emma a bit of an outcast in her school, but she knew it would pay off.
