  •  In order to succeed, missionaries had to understand the politics and customs of the islands in which they worked and lived. Most important, they had to understand the language. They and their families faced many personal hardships. Their work was very difficult. It was not easy to change island religious beliefs and practices, which were deeply rooted in island cultures.
  • Island chiefs often used missionaries for their own political advantage. Likewise, many missionaries got on the good side of chiefs for protection and support.
  • Spanish Jesuits arrived early in Micronesia, in the 1600s. They were part of Spanish colonial rule in the Mariana Islands. They eventually converted (changed) the Chamorros to Catholicism, though not without bloodshed. Many priests, religious teachers, and Chamorros were killed. Spanish troops burned villages that did not cooperate.
