The blonde child at the back is unhealthy, I can tell from here!
Well? Do we let her go?
It is for the best!
The Red Cross Dear Mr. and Mrs. Felfernigg, Your daughter has been selected to be taken to Switzerland to stay with a new family for three months in order to regain health in a safer environment. She will be educated and provided with clothes, food and more. More details will be sent soon. Thanks, The Red Cross
I was 7 and a half years old, two years after WWII. I was a skinny young girl. I was in my classroom at school when two mysterious men came into our classroom. They said nothing, but simply looked around.
Are we there yet?
Two weeks later, my parents received a letter saying I was undernourished, and people in Switzerland would take me in for three months a year to help me.
It turns out the Red Cross had gone to multiple classrooms around Austria, picking the most undernourished child from each one to be put on a train to Switzerland.
Just days before my 8th birthday, I boarded a train with several other Austrian boys and girls. We traveled for 2 long days and nights on our way to Swiss country. I was given a necklace stating the logo of the Red Cross, my name and my destination.
On the border of Switzerland, each of us was taken off the train and showered so that we could be presented well to our new carers. After being washed, we started back to the train.
