  • Magna  Carta 
  •  King John made powerful enemies when he became king in 1199. He lost most of the lands, he taxed barons, ignored their traditional rights, and arrested opponents at will. 
  • You are out numbered!!!!
  • In June 1215, King John was forced to a meeting by angry barons. The meeting was in a meadow called Runnymede, beside the River Thames.
  • I no longer have power. 
  • We now have power. 
  • They insisted that King John put his seal to the Magna Carta, or to the Great Charter. It was an agreement between the barons and the king. 
  • We were able to obtain power.
  • King John had no choice other than agreeing because was outnumbered. The agreement or Magna Carta protected the rights and privileges of nobles. 
  • Some of the political changes strengthened royal authority at the expense of nobles. Power was also shifted to common people. 
  • Common people and monarchs were able to obtain power, with the advice of the governed. They maintained power through their tradition that gave rise to modern democratic institutions.
