  • Indian Country
  • After the Indian Removal Act was passed, the Cherokee Nation resisted removal. They where not going to leave their homelands, and they didn't for almost 7 years. The Cherokee and the Creeks resisted the longest, with the Creeks fighting three wars against removal (Pearson).
  • Even though the Natives held out against removal, the new president, Martin Van Buren, forced the Cherokees out of their lands. Almost 7,000 troops to facilitate the removal by forcing the Natives out at gun point, burning and looting towns. They also accompanied the Natives on the 116 day journey through the  bitter cold winter. Almost 16,000 Natives died along the way from exhaustion, illness, and the small amount of supplies (Brittanica).
  • After marching through the snow without resting, the Natives arrived in Indian country, which is located in modern day Oklahoma. There, they began the long and painful process of rebuilding their culture, life, history, and villages. Their population decreased as they struggled in the new land, which was difficult to civilize. Even today, Native American groups like the Cherokee struggle (Pearson).
