  • The knight came riding from the river and rapes the virgin by the water .
  • The knight was nearly sentenced to death by the king, but the queen and other ladies implored that he spare the knight's life.
  • The knight searched every place for an answer to the queen's question, but gets many different answers. At last he perceived that he may never learn what it was that women loved best .
  • "What could it be that women want most?" (line 97)
  • The knight meets the old hag in the forest and she gives him the answer that he has been searching for, in exchange for one favor.
  • "You shall know the answer before night. Swear to do what I shall next require of you." (line 185-186, line 188)
  • The knight gives the queen his answer and she spares his life. However, the old hag demands that the knight marry her in exchange for saving his life.
  • "For God's love, think of a new request" (line 236)
  • Twas I who taught this answer to the knight, for which he swore, and pledged his honor to it, that the first thing I asked of him he'd do it" (line 226-228) "Keep you word and take me as your wife." (line 231)
