One of the times Tokugawa Ieyasu exploited his power and wealth as an absolute ruler was during the construction of Edo Castle. He supervised the construction of the massive castle and it was funded by Japan's Daimyo's but all of the rewards went to him.
Instead of trading with China exclusively, Tokugawa opted to trade with Portugal, the Dutch and Britain. This trade brought Japan firearms, information from around the world and overall profit.
However, as time went on, Tokugawa saw the christian missionaries coming to them from Europe as a threat and eventually discouraged the practice of their religion. This went on to the point where Christianity was almost completely eradicated from Japan.
