Cellular Respiration and Glycolysis

Storyboard Text

  • Have you heard about cellular respiration?
  • No! What's that all about?
  • Well, it is an aerobic process, which means it requires oxygen. It occurs in all cells! There are three stages of respiration!
  • Really?
  • Yup! And there is even an equation that scientists use to describe respiration. It is 6 oxygen + glucose --> 6  carbon dioxide + 6 water + ATP energy
  • That's so cool! What is the first step?
  • The first step is called glycolysis. It is the first step in the breakdown of glucose. This step releases energy in the form of ATP and NADPH, it's net gain of ATP is 2! It takes place in the cytoplasm. This is the only step in cellular respiration that can occur with or without oxygen.
  • I'm still a little confused...
  • Not a problem! Have a look at this diagram!
  • That helps a lot, thank you! Learning about cellular respiration was so much fun!
