Storyboard Text

  • Frederick douglass is a boy who was born into slavery. Slavery is very harsh for douglass and the living and working conditions are horrible. The living conditions were sleeping on a cold, hard floor with a coarse thin blanket if you were lucky. Douglass has had many slave owners over the years one of the most cruel was Mr. Covey. Mr. Covey was a slave breaker that broke douglass spirit. Then one day douglass was sent to go live with mr. freeland. One night when he couldn’t sleep he resolved that in the new year he will get his liberty and freedom.
  • Frederick figures out that he wants his liberty and thought about how he would get help from some of the slaves he teaches at the Sabbath School. When he finds Henry he goes and tells him. “ Henry!” Douglass called out “can you get some of the slaves and bring them to the school I will get John to help you.” “ of course I can” said Henry. When Douglass found John he told him the same thing. Douglass gave them what he thought was 10 minutes then went over to the school and saw a few of the slaves there and started telling them what he wants to do. They all agreed to help him.
  • They were all in the cold dark school light only by candles then they all planned to steal Mr. Hamilton’s canoe on the day before the Easter holidays and then paddle straight up the Chesapeake Bay guided by the north star. They chose to take a water route because anyone who sees them may think they are just fishermen. One bad thing about going north is their knowledge only went up to New York and they knew nothing about canada. They had to be worried about getting lost.  Douglass was with the slaves planning “ So we will steal Mr. Hamilton's canoe on the saturday before easter and then sail up the Chesapeake Bay to avoid being examined or being deemed suspicious. right?” one of the slave said. “ Correct. And I will make the passes so it looks like we were giving permission from Mr. Freeland to go.” Douglass confirmed
  • Exactly one week before the plan takes action when Douglass was walking to breakfast he saw 4 white men and 2 colored men walking up to him. Then Mr. Freeland called for Douglass to come outside. when he went outside his hands were tied tightly together and he was told he was to be examined due to suspicion of writing fake passes to escape. He was to be searched in front of his master. He was worried because he knew if they searched him they would find the fake passes and Mr. Freeland would know he never wrote those and find out douglass did then they would be thrown in jail or a worse fate douglass didn’t want to think about.
  • When the men were attempting to tie up John he decided to have a “temper tantrum” and refuse to get tied. “ YOU WON’T TIE ME UP. I REFUSE TO GET TIED!” yelled John as he was kicking, punching and screaming “ YOU WILL GET TIED IF IT IS THE LAST THING I DO!”. yelled the other man. When John was having his “temper tantrum”  the other men called Mr. freeland over to help which gave Douglass time to get his pass out of his pocket and throw it in the fire without being noticed so if they searched me they didn’t find the pass. Now all i have to worry about is henry and john.
  • When they were close to Saint Michaels john came up to douglass and asked what to do with his pass has. “ What should i do with my pass?” john asked “ Eat it with a biscuit.” Douglass responded they started yelling “ OWN NOTHING!”. When they got to Saint Michaels they were thrown in jail in cells far away from each other. The jail cell Douglass was in was cold, damp, and the floor was extremely hard with no bed and a very thin blanket. At the end of the week Douglass was taken out of jail by Captain Auld who said he was going to Alabama but instead he was sent to go back to baltimore to work for his brother Hugh again and learn a trade. In truth douglass didn't want to stay in jail so he went with captain auld and went back to baltimore to work for hugh again.
