One day, Jonas as getting ready for the Ceremony of Twelve. This is the most important ceremony because the Twelves would be getting their assignments. Jonas sees his friend Asher. They leave for the ceremony.
Okay. I know that you think think that I have made a mistake, I am sorry.
Jonas has not been assigned, he has been selected. He is the Reciever of Memory. The most honored job in the community.
Jonas was coming to the ceremony when he sees something strange
We must do this Jonas, it is our responsibility to help the people have memories. We have to give the memories back to them.
Okay, but how?
At the Ceremony of Twelve, the Chief Elder calls out all the Twelve's assignments but skips Jonas.
At the end of the assignments, the Elder explains why she skipped Jonas.
Jonas is told to go back to a building to meet the Giver. He starts training and receives memories. A year passes and the Giver realizes that things must change and the people should all have memories.
The Giver describes the plan to Jonas. Jonas would go out of the community, to Elsewhere where he would shed the memories that he has. The Giver would be there at the community to help them through it. The people will then have the memories. So that night, Jonas sneaked out and rode his bike for miles and miles. Finally he felt a place that felt right. He knew that that was Elsewhere. He crossed it and felt something he knew was music. He thought it might be an echo.
