As Esperanza looks around, Nenny finds a box and asks Gil what it is. Gil tells her that it is a music box and Esperanza gets excited only to realize that it is not a pretty box with a dancing ballerina inside, After listening to it play beautiful music, Nenny asks how much it costs. But Gil tells her it is not for sale.

“They put handcuffs on him and put him in the backseat of the cop car and we all waved as they drove away.”In this chapter Esperanza, Marin, Louie, and his two baby sister, ride Louie's cousins car. After riding in the car for some time the police start chasing Louie's Cousin. They then drive to an alley and hit a streetlamp. Everyone but Louie's Cousin steps out of the car and he is arrested. Everyone waves as the police drive away with him.

"Who's stupid? Rachel, Lucy, Esperanza and Nenny."In this chapter, Esperanza, Rachel, Lucy and Nenny are watching the clouds. While talking, Rachel offends Esperanza. This turns into a heated argument between the two by throwing insults at each other. Eventually they stop fighting after arguing about their mothers and who is stupid.
“We are tired of being beautiful. Lucy hides the lemon shoes and the red shoes and the shoes that used to be white but are now pale blue,...until one Tuesday her mother, who is very clean, throws them away.”In this chapter, Rachel, Esperanza, and Lucy are given shoes by a family with tiny feet. At first they are excited about the pretty shoes, but quickly realize that they bring unwanted attention. When an old man asks Rachel to kiss him for money, they run away. They proceed to hide the shoes under Lucy's mother porch until they are thrown away.
”In the canteen, which was nothing special, lots of boys and girls watched as I cried and ate my sandwich, the bread already greasy and the rice cold.”In this chapter Esperanza asks her mother if she can eat at the canteen at her school. One day her mother finally agrees, sending a letter to the school asking Sister Superior if Esperanza can eat in the canteen. Although Sister Superior gets mad at her for wanting to eat in the canteen, she takes pity on her and lets her eat their for one day. Esperanza spends the rest of her lunch time crying while eating her lunch.
