  • This place is like an African desert.
  • The Americans wanted to expand so they bought land from the French for only $15 million. The French were so desperate for money they only sold it for $15 million.
  • Stephen Long
  • This place sucks
  • Lewis & Clark are explorers from France looking to trade and make peace. They described the land as “Great beauty...variety of game...deer seemed plentiful... an abundance of wild raspberries."
  • Jackson's Speech
  • Zebulon Pike was an American explorer who went to explore the land in western Kansas. He described it as an African desert and is useless to the Americans.
  • Indian Removal Act
  • About 10 years later an explorer named Stephen Long went back to western Kansas and placed a sign with writing saying "The Great American Desert."
  • The Great American Desert
  • Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the United States. He gave a speech to congress about how they should move these "savages" to "The Great American Desert" and use the land the Indians were using for the Americans.
  • The Indians have moved away from their houses and brought to western Kansas. One of the trails that were used to take them to western Kansas is known as "The Trail of Tears."
