Two days later, Matthew and his mom go to see Dr. Altwood.
Alright Matthew, your mom said you've been having some breathing issues. So I'm going to do a respiratory check-up and see what's going on?
Ok. I don't care, I just want to be able to play soccer.
Dr. Altwood listens to Matthew's breathing, and then begins to feel his neck for swelling.
Ok Matthew, so you have some swelling in your neck, most likely your lymph nodes. So, I',m going to send you for a PET Scan because of your A - T. And then, I'd like to take a bone marrow sample to check your blood cell count.
Matthew gets his PET Scan and bone marrow sample taken.
Matthew, Ms. Finnegan I'm sorry to say it but Matthew has Stage III Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
To be more specific, Matthew has Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. This means that Matthew had too many lymphoblasts, or immature white blood cells, in his lymph nodes and thymus gland. When I took the PET Scan, it showed that the cancer most likely started from behind his breastbone.
