  • "Oh, there was the door to mend and the mess to be cleaned up. And the wasted porridge...It's the sign she said. What sign mama? Lyddie asked though she did not want an answer. Clarissa said when the end drew near, the devil would walk the earth. That weren't no devil mama. Charles said. I were only a black bear...Tomorrow we're going to Poultney, their mother said. I aim to be with the faithful when the end comes." pg 4-5

  • "So! You've decided to honor us with a visit!" the mistress's face was red with heat or rage..."You're dismissed! pg 44
  • Character vs Society
  • "Our crime has been to speak out for better working conditions. Yes why, then should the operatives themselves fear us?" pg 69
  • After the bear came in, Mama was mentally scarred and thought it was a sign of the devil and the end of the world. After this event she decided to relocate to Poultney with Rachel and Agnes, which changes the entire plot of the story. Though the bear might not have caused much damage itself, in a way it changed the plot of the story.
  • The mistress is angry towards Lyddie for taking a vacation while she was gone. In her anger, she fires Lyddie. This conflict leaves Lyddie no choice but to become a factory girl in Lowell.
  • Diana is in a conflict with the society. This is because she belived that the factory girls deserve better rights and she is protesting against their current working conditions. This is why this conflict would be character vs society.
