  • Hi! I'm Emilia, and I love soccer. My favorite team is Barcelona. I want to tell you about how sports and media fulfill a functionalist duty!
  • To begin, it's important to know that all sports (especially fùtbol) bring people together in solidarity. We call this "collective effervescence" in textbook terms.
  • The rituals of attending a game, having certain chants and wearing a team's colors also help other fans identify each other. For example, when I go to a Barcelona home game, all the fans sing ‘El Cant del Barça' because it's a tradition that we have!
  • I'm not wearing his jersey now, but my favorite player is Lionel Messi. He is fantastic! I'm wearing my team jersey now, and mi familia will wear our colors to support us! It works the same way as if I were to wear a Messi jersey to a game. It increases the opposition to other teams an solidarity to others
  • ¡Amiga, Aqui! One last thing, the state uses this to instill a sense of nationalism and patriotism in sports fans by having them sing the national anthem before games! So not only do you show allegiance and solidarity to your team, but to your country as well.
  • Thats how functionalism applies to media and sports. ¡Adios!
