  • The 1946 Governors Race started out when Eugene Talmadge was elected to a 4th term. He died from Cirrhosis before he could take office.
  • I refuse to leave!
  • Herman Talmadge (Eugene's son) was a secret write-in candidate in the election and claimed the General Assembly should choose him as governor.
  • WHAT?
  • Melvin E. Thompson is acting governor!
  • Umm..?
  • Lt. Governor- Elect Melvin E. Thompson claimed that he should be governor.
  • woohoo!
  • Thank you, thank you!
  • Outgoing governor Ellis Arnall refused to leave office until matter was settled.
  • This issue went to the GA Supreme Court. The court ruled that Melvin E. Thompson was to be the acting governor until a special election could be held the next year.
  • Herman Talmadge is elected by the people in 1948.
