  • how about we tax liquor? i mean like what could go wrong?
  • the constitution established a tax on distilled liquor
  • farmers felt mistreated by the tax because distilling grain made it easier to transport
  • the farmers began to protest, causing washington to admolish them. washingtons action backfired and the protests became violent
  • protesters burned down the house of john neville, a tax collector.
  • Washington organized a militia force of 12,950 men and led them towards Western Pennsylvania, warning locals "not to abet, aid, or comfort the Insurgents aforesaid, as they will answer the contrary at their peril."
  • the rebellion ended peacefully once washington called in the militia.  this rebellion was a standpoint for the newly established government's power and authority.
