Feudalism was developed out of the need for more protection from the Muslims, Vikings, and Magyars. It was a loosely organized system of rule in which powerful local lords divided land among lesser lords. In exchange the vassals pledged service and loyalty to the greater lords. Lords gave vassals a fief or plot of land in exchange for their service.
The Vikings are attacking our land. We need your help! In exchange for a plot of land , would you help us protect our land?
Yes, i will gather my knights.
The High Middle ages were a time of increased economic wealth in Europe from 1000-1300. During this time the agricultural revolution took place where new farming technology began to thrive. As a result, fields were more productive. Peasants began using iron plows, new harnesses were made for horses , and farmers were utilizing wind to turn grain into flour.
With all our farming advances, the populations in Europe has nearly doubled! This means there will be an increased desire for goods for both peasants and nobles.
Lets get to work then.
In medieval times, Nobles and the church had more power and authority then Kings and Monarchs. Both had their own courts, tax collecting methods, and fielded their own armies, however, monarchs used various means to centralize their power. They established a system of royal justice that undermined the church and feudal courts, developed a system of taxes and more, which led to more towns people supporting the kings.
