The ceremony of twelves has just ended, and the crowd is confused whether the Chief Elder had made a mistake or not. She skipped over number 19, Jonas' number when giving assignments.
The Chief Elder explains how Jonas has been chosen. He has been selected to be the next retriever of memory. Jonas doesn't exactly know what this means, but he knows it's rare for one to be chosen.

The Chief Elder goes on to further explain that some of the people who are chosen don't develop enough through training to become s receiver of memory. She talks about how people may not develop to proper traits.
Lastly, you will need to be able to "see beyond"
Jonas wonders whether this assignment will suit him. He ponders whether he would like to work alone, away from everyone else.
The Chief Elder explains how Jonas has shown her committee every trait needed to become a receiver of memory. Jonas needs to be intelligent, have integrity, courage, and the capacity to "see beyond."
The Chief Elder asks Jonas if he has experienced the ability to "see beyond"." At first Jonas can't recall a time, but right then and there, the crowd "changes" but he can't describe it. He tells the Chief Elder that he indeed does have all the required traits.
