The main character, Louie Zamperini, was born in Olean, New York to his parents Anthony and Louise Zamperini on January 26, 1917. He had two younger sisters and an older brother name Virginia, Sylvia, and Pete.
As Louie enters his young teen age, he gets smacked with physical and verbal abuse for being an Italian by his neighborhood. For this reason, he would steal money, cigarettes, and anything else that meant something for him.
As Louie's years go by, his older brother, Pete, examine his desperate little brother, so he came in to solve his solutions. Pete registered Louie for the high school track team. In his mind, he knew that Louie is somewhat fast, so he begins his training with him.

As Pete continues to train Louie, he started to run harder and faster, and he was winning all the school meets and destroying top records, too. People were beginning to recognize Louie due to his superb talent.
As Louie is recognized around the world, he got a chance to compete in the Berlin Olympics when he was at the age of 19. Therefore, Pete gave a ride for Louie to the train station to say their goodbyes.
Louie begins his first Olympic trials with the U.S. team in New York.
