I pray to the God within me for the strength to ask Him the real questions.
Why do you pray, Moishe?
Keep her quiet! Make that madwoman shut up.
Look at the fire! Look at the flames
What are you going to do, sir?
Couldn't you wait a few days sir? I don't feel well
All right son. Come back to see me when you feel better.
I shall remove your gold crown, that's all.
In the beginning of the chapter, Elie realizes that he wants to study the Kabbalah, however, his father says that he’s too young. As a result, Elie turns to Moishe the Beadle. Not long after, all of the foreign Jews are expelled by the Hungarian police, including Moishe. A few months later, Moishe returns & tells everyone what happened to them, but nobody believes him. Slowly the Jews realize that things are changing & they were forced into cattle cars & are shipped off.
Here, take this knife, I won't need it anymore. You may find it useful. Also take this spoon.
One of the Jewish woman in the cattle car, Madame Schachter, appeared to have gone mad. She began moaning, screaming and crying nonstop for her family. She later screams about a fire, but no one knows what she’s talking about. As a result, they beat her until she’s quiet. Once the Jews arrive at Birkenau, they see a fire coming from the chimneys & smell burning flesh in the air.
My stomach aches. I can't go on. My stomach is
Once Elie and his father arrive at Buna, those who have gold crowns must have them removed, Elie being one of them. Elie was able to put this off several times until the dentist was hung for selling the teeth. Later on, Idek beats Elie’s father, but Elie isn’t concerned, but instead he’s mad at him for not being strong enough. His father continues to get beaten until Elie finally gives him his gold tooth. Afterwards Elie accidentally catches Idek with a woman, which results in getting publicly whipped. Towards the end of the chapter, Elie had seen several hangings, which resulted in him losing his faith.
Leave him alone. Can't you see that he's dead?
Father! Father! Wake up. They're going to throw you outside.
After New Years, there is another selection and Elie’s father is afraid he won’t survive, so he gives Elie a few items. However, he does survive, therefore, Elie’s returns the items back to him. During the winter, Elie’s foot started to swell, which resulted in him going to the hospital for surgery. While in the hospital, the whole camp, besides the hospital, was being evacuated. Elie chooses to stay with his father & to leave with the rest of the Jews, which turned out to be a bad decision because the Jews in the infirmary were saved a few days later.
Don't talk like that Father.
Elie and the rest of the prisoners are evacuated & forced to walk in the blizzard at night. On the walk, Zalman falls & is trampled by the other men. Upon the arrival at another concentration camp, Elie & his father are crushed under a pile of men. Days later, there’s another selection & Elie’s father is chosen to die. There’s a sudden commotion & Elie sneaks his father to the other side.
I can't go on.
Wait a little, Zalman. Soon, we will all come to hault
On the way to the next camp, the prisoners are ordered to throw out the dead bodies. Elie's father was almost thrown out because he looked like he dead, but Elie’s saves him at the last moment. In the cattle cars, the Jews didn’t’ have any food or water. As they were passing through the towns, people threw bread into the cars & watched the prisoners attack each other for it.
