  • Attack on Fort Sumter
  • First Battle of Bull Run
  • Battle of Shiloh
  • Fort Sumter, a government outpost, was attacked by Confederate troops on April 12, 1861. This began the civil war.
  • Battle of Antietam
  • On July 21, 1861, near Manassas, Virginia, the Confederate Army lead by General Pierre G.T. Beauregard defeated the Union.
  • Emancipation Proclamation
  • On the morning of April 6, 1862, the Union Army won a battle and gained greater control of the Mississippi River valley.
  • Battle of Gettysburg
  • On September 17, 1862, the bloodiest battle of the civil war took place at Antietam.
  • This important proclamation, given by Abraham Lincoln, freed all the slaves in the Confederate states. It was issued on September 22, 1862.
  • On July 1, 1863, this battle took place between the Union, lead by General George G. Meade, and the Confederates, lead by General Robert E. Lee. It helped to ensure the Union victory.
