Storyboard Text

  • Cambridge University, 1953
  • I happen to be reading  an article just publish today, proposing that the structure of DNA is a triple helix polymer.
  • That is interesting. Not necessarily what we thought. We should investigate further.
  • In The Lab...
  • I have a resource that just may be able to get us access to one of these X-ray diffraction images.
  • Let me know the news when you get back from meeting with Maurice.
  • Watson meets with Maurice Wilkins
  • Yes. This photo was taken using x-ray crystallography.
  • I am so glad to have the chance to meet you. So I have been hearing about a photo you have showing some evidence pertaining to the structure of DNA.
  • Watson is sitting on a bench reading a newspaper when Crick approaches him.
  • Back at Cambridge University...
  • When I met with Maurice Wilkins he showed me a picture taken by someone working for him. I think her name was Rosalind? I'm not really sure...
  • So the picture showed that DNA has a double helix, just what we have thought!
  • The two are discussing their findings so far and the evidence they still need.
  • In The Lab...
  • Let’s create a model of our proposed structure of DNA.
  • We can prove our point correct!
  • Wilkins takes it upon himself to show Watson an X-ray crystallography image of DNA, taken by a colleague.
  • The Morning of February 28, 1953
  • That arrangement makes for a sugar phosphate backbone, the two helixes in the DNA being antiparallel, so they are running in opposite directions.
  • There are 10 nucleotides per turn in our 3D structure of DNA.
  • Watson reports what he found, when seeing the X-ray crystallography image, to Crick.
  • Watson and Crick are working together to put their evidence together. They then propose building a model.
  • Using a 3D model, they confirm the double helix model of DNA.
