"She's not here just to do things for us all the time you know. Especially things we can do ourselves."
Bruno is very inquisitive and is kind to everyone.
Gretel has blonde hair, and is taller than Bruno.
"'You're nine,' countered Gretel. 'How would you know? When you get to my age you'll understand these things a lot better.'"
Gretel is immature for her age, and tries to act older than she is.
Father is very stern and is well respected.
"You have nothing whatsoever in common with them. Just settle into your new home and be good, that's all I ask"
Father's hair is always perfectly done and his suit is always ironed.
Bruno is a curious nine year old boy, who loves to explore. He is the protagonist in the book, and is not very happy with his situation. Bruno is a small German boy, who is very fortunate because his father is in the fury. He believes that you should always be polite to everyone, and is very respectful.
Lieutenant Kotler is very stern with the people that work for him, but can be civil with people like Bruno and Gretel.
Gretel is a immature tween who loves dolls and annoying her brother. She is Bruno's older sister, and loves to tease him. She has a crush on Lieutenant Kotler, and loves dolls. Gretel is not as respectful as Bruno and can be rude at times. She doesn't seem like she likes living at Out-With either, but I don't think she minds as much as Bruno does.
Schmuel is very smart and knows multiple languages. He also doesn't like soldiers.
Schmuel's hands are very small and skeleton like, and he wears striped pajamas.
Father is Bruno and Gretel's father, and is very respected in the workplace. He is a commandant in the Fury and is very stern with Gretel and Bruno. He is very passionate about his work and Germany, even if some people that are close with him aren't. His study is always "Out Of Bounds With No Exceptions." All in all, I think he can be very frightening at times.
"There are many things your father has done. Many things of which you should be proud. If it wasn't for your father, where would I be now after all."
Maria wears clothes that a maid would wear, and is German.
Lieutenant Kurt Kotler is someone who works under Bruno and Gretel's father in the Fury. He can be very ruthless when it comes to people that work for him, or that work under him. Kotler tries to be civil with Bruno, but at the end of the day Bruno hates him. Kotler is 19, and is also very intimidating and scary.
His shoes are always polished, and he has very blonde hair.
"He will select one and you are to carry it wherever he asks you to, is that understood?"
Schmuel is a nine year-old jewish boy who lives in a concentration camp. He used to live in Poland, but now he lives there. Bruno came across him one time when he was exploring, and now they are friends. Schmuel is not much of a risk taker, but somehow Bruno eventually pressures him into it. He is very sad and getting thinner by the day.
"He told me not to move from this seat or there'd be trouble."
Maria is Bruno's family's maid. She is a risk taker when it comes to talking to Bruno, even though they didn't talk much until they moved to Out-With. Bruno's father gave her the job as their made when her mother died and she had no where to go. Maria believes that Bruno's father is a very good man.
