Hello, my name is Jing-Mei Woo. I am the daughter of a Chinese immigrant named Suyuan Woo.
My mother and I have differing views on how my future should go. She thinks I'm some sort of prodigy. I think she's wrong.
In an effort to make me her prodigy, mom had me take piano lessons with Mr. Chong. A deaf guy...
HUH? I CAN'T HEAR YOU I'M DEAF. VERY GOOD JOB THOUGH!
One day my mother told me I'd have to play at my church. I wasn't too mad. That is, until I did terrible.
WHATEVER, MOTHER! I'm not a prodigy!
You only fail because you don't try! You are too lazy!
That's when I stopped playing piano. I told my mother how I really felt. I told her I'd never be the daughter she wanted me to be and that I wish I wasn't her daughter at all. I was sick of her expectations and trying to meet them. There was no point. I'd never be the type of daughter she wanted.
I had finally won the war with my mother. Sure, I "failed" her a few more times but at least I didn't have to worry about reaching impossible goals.
All you had to do was try. You could be so much more right now.
