  • HELEN!
  • Well, she's not in her teens, you know.
  • How old is she?
  • Helen is a baby. She has just recovered from acute congestion. Or so they thought... Kate, Helen's mother is talking to Helen when she realizes Helen isn't reacting. She waves a hand in front of the baby girl's face. Helen gives no reaction. She snaps her fingers in front of Helen's eyes, and of course, there isn't a reaction. Kate yells for her husband and Helen's father, Captain Keller, who yells in sadness and frustration. Helen remains calm despite the yelling. She is deaf and blind.
  • I always wanted to live in a doll's house!
  • 6 years later, the Kellers call for a governess/teacher. Annie Sullivan, who is half-blind herself, comes to teach Helen. Kate is doubtful of the young woman at first, but soon sees her potential. Captain Keller remains doubtful of her. Annie sets a suitcase down forcefully and Helen is curious to find out who the new person is. This is the first time Helen and Annie meet.
  • If there's anything you want from us in repayment call us, it will be a priveledge to-
  • Miss Annie...
  • I just told Mrs. Keller. I want more time.
  • Another week.
  • A few days after Annie arrives, Helen tries to eat food off of her plate at dinner. Annie doesn't let her. Helen expects to be able to without any objections because her parents always let her without disciplining her. Helen gets mad. Annie asks everyone to leave, so they do. Helen begins to pinch and slap Annie, so Annie slaps her back. At the end of all the struggle, Helen ends up eating with her spoon and folding her napkin.
  • Wah. Wah.
  • Wah. Wah.
  • Water. W,a,t,e,r. Water. It has
  • Yes.
  • Yes! Oh, my dear...
  • Helen won't let Annie touch her. Annie can't teach Helen without touching.Annie asks to move into the garden house with Helen. She wants full control of Helen and what she does. Captain Keller and Kate are hesitant to agree, but eventually say she and Helen can stay there for two weeks. Helen's parents are allowed to see her, but they can't let their daughter know they are there.
  • When the two weeks are up, the Kellers are eager to see their daughter again. Annie wants more time to try to teach Helen, but the Kellers won't let her. They tell her it's amazing that she got Helen to behave and keep herself clean. Annie feels like it isn't enough and like she has let Helen down.
  • Annie desperately tries to get Helen to realize what she spells into her hand has a meaning in the little time she has left. She takes Helen to the water pump and spells 'Water' into her hand. Helen says 'Wah wah' with a bit of a struggle and now knows that words have meaning. She spells to Annie to ask what the things around her are. Annie hugs Helen saying 'I love you...forever.'
