Ikemefuna stays with Okonkwo and his family for 3 years and bonds with Nwoye, making him more masculine, which makes Okonkwo happy. Locusts infest the village of Umuofia and i[t is said that they visit every generation and will visit every year for the next 7 years. The people in the village collect the locusts because when cooked, they enjoy them. Ogbuefi visits Okonkwo, but he does not enter the house to share a meal. Outside, he tells Okonkwo (in private) that the Oracle has said that Ikemefuna must be killed, but tells Okonkwo to not take part in the killing of Ikemefuna since Ikemefuna calls him ¨father¨. While walking, Ikemefuna thinks about his mother and a man attacks him with a machete and he cries for Okonkwo to help. Nwoye cries because his friend, Ikemefuna, is dead.
Okonkwo is in a deep depression where he cannot eat or sleep and he always feels weak. Ezinma brings him a meal a few days later and tells him to eat it all. He repeatedly says that he wishes Ezinma was a boy and how he hates that he is acting like a shrivled up old woman. Then Okonkwo visits Obierika and he congratulates Maduka on his successful wrestling. Obierika asks Okonkwo to stay with him to see his daughters suitor. Okonkwo complains to Obierika that his sons aren´t manly enough and that he wishes Exinma was a boy since she has the ¨Right spirit¨. Okonkwo feels more revived and less weak. He tells himself that his unhappiness was because of the time when he killed Ikemefuna. Okonkwo stays with Obierika to discuss the bride-price for Obierika´s daughters suitor.
OzoemenaEkwefi wakes Okonkwo up one early morning to inform him that Ezinma is dying. Okonkwo says that Ezinma has a fever and starts collecting the medicine. Since Ezinma is Ekwefi´s only child, Ezinma is the center of her world and she is very lenient with her. Ekwefi[´s other 9 children died[in infancy. She named them symbolic names, like Ozoemena, which means ¨May it not happen again¨. Okonkwo talks to a medicine man and the medicine man tells him that Ekwefi has an Ogbanje, which means is a wicked child who continually forms in the mother and dies over and over, giving the parents grief. Ekwefi disfigures her 3rd childs body so the Ogbanje does not return again. Ezinma was an ogbanje child and suffered from many illnesses, but she fought through all of them and survived.
Umuofia, the village, has a ceremonial gathering to administer justice. The egwugwu, or the clans ancestral spirits, come out from a secret house, where no one is allowed in. They take form of a masked man and the village suspects Okonkwo is with them. All the women and kids are filled with fear, even though the egwugwu are usually men replicating spirits. The 1st disagreement involves an alienated wife and husband. Uzowulu, who is the husband, says that Mgbafo, his wife, has 3 brothers and they beat him. The brothers defend themselves and say that Uzowulu beats his wife, Mgbafo, inhumanly.
