  • Isaiah & his parents (Jews) moved to Petrograd from Latvia in 1914
  • The Berlin family witnessed both the Feb & October revolutions in 1917 in Russia. 
  • They were harassed by the Bolshevik army but eventually managed to move to London. 
  • Isaiah grew up in London, and pursued higher education in Oxford where he studied Ancient History, Philo, Politics & Economics. He excelled in it & worked in Oxford thereafter. 
  • During WW2, Isaiah worked for the British Info Systems in NYC at the Brit Embassy. 
  • In 1945-1946, he was also sent to Soviet Union where he was horrified at the conditions of a communist regime. This formed his future intellectual agenda.
  • Isaiah's academic studies centred around Russian History of ideas, Marxist & socialist theories, political ideology.
  •  In 1956, he married his beloved Aline Halban & they had 3 sons together. 
  • In 1957, Isaiah was knighted. In 1971, he was given the Order of Merit. His charming & wittily spoken & written works still influence many today.
