In the first chapter, spring is a motif used to symbolize new life. Nick moves east "in the spring of twenty-two" in hope of a new life (Fitzgerald 3).
Five years ago, Gatsby and Daisy were in love. Daisy's "mother had found her packing her bag one winter night", she was going to New York to be with Gatsby (Fitzgerald 75). That winter all of the trees died and so did their relationship.
Gatsby and Daisy argued a lot. Rain is used as a weather motif "rising and swelling a little now and then with gusts of emotion" as they argued (Fitzgerald 88).
