This conversation shows that most migrant workers are very lonely people, but George and Lennie have each other, so they don't have to be lonely as long as they stick together.
We don't have to sit in no bar room blowin' in our jack jus' because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us."
"But not us! An' why? Because... because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why."
This is a perfect example that loneliness is a normal thing here on the ranch. Their boss is suspicious of George and Lennie because they travel together. This is because most migrant workers didn't have any friends, never mind travel together.
"Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy. I just like to know what your interest is."
Candy knew his dog was no longer doing himself any good, and that he was sick, but he would be lonely without him. He was afraid of what it would be like without his best friend. This dog meant a whole lot more to him than Carlson realized.
"Well- hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him." He said proudly, "You wouldn't think it to look at him now, but he was the best damn sheep dog I ever seen."
All of the people at the ranch are lonely, but Crooks is the most lonely out of all of them. Because he's African American no one wants to talk or play games with him. The people aren't close at the farm anyway but Crooks is left out of everything, all because he has darker skin.
"'Cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me."
Curley's wife was extremely hard to have compassion on until now. Before she looked a lot like a trouble maker, but now we know the reality is that she is extremely lonely because no one is talking to her and she doesn't even like her husband.
Coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes- all them nice clothes like they wear.
This is a perfect example how lonely the men at the ranch work. Carlson is so lonely that he doesn't even understand why George is upset when he has to kill his friend Lennie. It is just sad because no one at the ranch really had any close friends so they don't understand the deep hurt that George is feeling.
Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?
