Charlie started writing anonymous letters to a friend. He explains how he deals with the tragic events in his life. He meets Sam and Patrick, who become his closest friends, and Charlie develops a crush on Sam. Also, his English teacher, Bill Anderson, makes Charlie work harder because he sees his potential.
Charlie starts working for a magazine that is run by Mary Elizabeth, who he gets into a relationship with. The holidays come, and Charlie has a hard time because they bring up bad memories for him. Patrick and Sam are there for Charlie through the struggling because his family can't be. His family all have their own way of dealing with their family member, Aunt Helen's, death.

Charlie explains what he went through when he was on LSD. Sam and Patrick make sure Charlie will be okay when he got out of the hospital. Also. when playing truth or dare, Charlie turns his friends against him because he can't hide his feelings for Sam.

Patrick's boyfriend was caught by his dad and sent to reheb. When Brad got out, he did not talk to Patrick. This eventually causes a fight between them and other people joined. Charlie ended up breaking up the fight. This cause their friend group to come together again.
Bill tells Charlie hes planning on moving away. Charlie appreciates him so much that he gets emotional. Bill gives him a good book that inspires Charlie to try and write his own.
His closest friends are now graduated and moving on. Sam and Charlie starting kissing and then Charlies awful memories came back and he snapped. Later, he forgave his Aunt Helen for molesting him and moved on with his life. He stops writing his friend in hopes to "participate in his life."
