  • Nare Maghan is the king of Mali , and his wife, Sogolon, just birthed a baby boy named Sundiata.
  • The baby is a boy! He can carry on my legacy!
  • However, Sundiata's legs are useless.
  • Sundiata is useless. He can't even walk at three years old!
  • The people of the village begin talk about Sundiata and his family.
  • He can't even walk, and he is three years old?
  • Yes, he's a total disgrace to the king's family.
  • Sogolon tries to use the influence of other kids to get Sundiata to walk.
  • No!
  • Look at all the other kids walking. Don't you want to walk? 
  • Nare Maghan's first wife, Sassouma, has a son who is eleven and is a fine yong man. The king even had a bow made for him.
  • Look at my son go!
  • Sassouma rejoices in the fact that Sogolon's son cannot use his legs. The king and his wife begin to lose all hope for the supposedly "future king".
  • While my son is a fine young man, yours can't even walk! HaHa!
