  • Noqaphi Nosekeni gave birth to Rolihlahla Mandela in 1918 in Mvezo, in South Africas eastern cape.
  • He was the first in his family to attend school, which is where he got his English name Nelson.
  • In 1941 he was set up for an arranged marriage, but he ran away to Johannesburg to avoid it.
  • In 1952 Mandela became a lawyer and founded the first black law firm with Oliver Tambo.
  • With fear that they would be banned by the apartheid government, ANC asked Mandela to make plans so that the party could work underground.
  • He then met Walter Sisulu who helped him get a job at a law firm, and in 1944 he went on to work in the African Nation
  • In 1956 Mandela was arrested and charged with treason. His trial lasted 4 and a half years, finishing with him being acquitted.
  • In 1958, Mandela married his second wife, Winnie Madikizela.
  • In 1962, Mandela was arrested for leaving the country illegally, and in 1963, while in prison, he was charged with sabotage.
  • Then, in 1964, he and 7 others were sentenced to life in jail.
  • In 1990, Mandela was freed after 27 years because the ban of the ANC was lifted. In 1993, Mandela and the SA president were awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for bringing stability to SA.
  • In 1994, people voted for the ANC party, and Mandela was named the first black president of SA. He stepped down as president in 1997.
  • On December 5th 2013, he died at the age of 95.
