  • Martin Luther found out that the Roman Catholic Church were abusing their power and where extremely wealthy. During this period of time people were affected by plagues and war. They thought this was God punishing them for their sins. The Church started selling indulgences to take away all or part of purgatory for someone "a free ticket to heaven".
  • Climax
  • Martin Luther had read the Bible; as many people during this period could not. He discovered the selling of indulgences was not want God would of wanted. In 1517 Luther posted 95 complaints "The 95 Theses" on the churches door in Wittenberg, Germany.

  • Martin Luther went into hiding in the town of Eisenach and was labelled a heretic. During this time he began to work on one of his major life projects, the translation of the New Testament into German. Guttenburgs printing press made Martin Luther word to spread quickly through Europe, starting the "Protestant Reformation"
  • Look there's the heretic.
  • Translating the Bible is hard work.
  • The Reformation resulted in The Council of Trent a meeting that consisted of Bishops working to eliminate existing problems in the Church. They abolished the sale of indulgences and made strict rules that the priests had to follow to prevent corruption. All people could now read the bible and life was refocused on charity and missionary work to reach heaven. There was also a greater tolerance of different beliefs and the new reformative religions.
