Storyboard Text

  • Aztec religion was based on their Gods, who all sacrificed themselves to be a sun for the humans
  • The Aztec people believed that they needed to sacrifice themselves to return the favour to the Gods.
  • Sacrifice was a very important tradition, and the Aztecs would usually sacrifice prisoners of war and slaves
  • Between 1000 and 25,000 sacrifices were made each year!
  • Because this was such a big tradition in society, the people would all watch the sacrifices taking place
  • In the sacrifices, the priest would stab the chest and take out the heart. The heart would then be placed in a stone vase or the priest would eat it
  • After the sacrifices were executed, the corpse would be beheaded. It would then be rolled down the temple stairs
  • The reason behind all of this was the Aztecs strict religion. They felt that if they didn't sacrifice themselves like the Gods did, the sun wouldn't rise again.
