  • Demeter was the daughter of cronus and rhea. She was the greek goddess of agriculture and one of the many wives of zeus and they had a daughter called persephone.
  • Climax
  • One day when persephone was a young woman she was picking flowers in a medow when Hades- the god of the underworld captured her and took her to his underground kingdom.
  • Falling action
  • Demeter was so heartbroken by the loss of her daughter that she left the gods' home on Mt Olympus and disguised as an old lady, went to the town of elius where she worked as a maid to the kings wife
  • Resolution
  • When persephone failed to return, Demeter used he powers to make the earth barren. no seeds could grow and no crops could be produceduntil Demeters daughter was returned to her
  • Finally zeus allowed persephone to be released to her mother however because she had eaten a part of a pomegranate (which was a symbol of her marrige to Hades), she could only be released to her mother for 8 months of a year. she had to spend the other four underground with hades.
  • The athenians held two festivals to demeter. one was in Athens in february-March and the other, elisinian Mysteries, was held at Elusis in september-October
