  • Exposition
  • "The gate slid open. Before he was quite ready for it, Brock found himself outside..."(13)
  • "He wanted to take off the dry suit but he had been told since he could remember that naked skin would suffer irreparable burns outside the protective dome."(14)
  • Rising Action 
  • "Something was lying under the shadow of a tree...And then he the small dog-the puppy.(30)"
  • "At the time all he could think of was the puppy, a small creature who had lost his mother.(30)
  • Conflict 
  •  "research was rather like quarantine, and since Brock had touched the dog ungloved and unprotected, he might well have picked up some germ.(69)"
  • "they kept a safe distance both physically and psychically from the creature. Only the oldest scientist, dressed in proper protective clothing, came into the laboratory...(65)"
  • The main character Brock leaves the dome to explore the polluted world.
  • Climax

  • "When Brock offered to take Brog out of the dome and let her loose in the mountains, no one argued. Neither did they say, “Hurry back,” or even, “Take care.”(92)
  • "Brock unscrewed his helmet just enough to let in a little of the outside atmosphere. Nothing happened. In fact, he seemed to be breathing perfectly normally.(93)
  • Brock reaches a tree and notices two dogs only the mother is dead and he knows the puppy will die if he does not help.
  • Falling Action
  • " Could it be? Could it be that fear had kept the dome dwellers prisoner many years longer than a poisoned environment would have?(94)
  • Brock names the remaining dog Brog and takes her back to the Dome, where they are then kept under observation.
  • Resolution
  • "Who knows, maybe out here you aren’t the last dog..."And maybe, just maybe where there are dogs there are humans..."(96-8)
  • "they stopped at the brook where they’d met, and both of them had a long drink. Brock no longer carried a scanner, but he knew what he felt was excitement."(99)
  • Brock is unhappy in the dome and does not want the scientists to hurt Brog so they pretend to be diseased and leave the dome forever.
  • Brock and Brog find a river and when Brock sees Brog drinking water he decides it is safe to take off his protection suit.
  • Brock and brog continue to happily live outside the dome together.
