In the next land, we found the Cyclopes. They are aggressive giants who live in mountain caves. I took twelve of my best fighters and we went to one of the caves, but the Cyclops, named Polyphemus, wasn't in it. We waited for him to pasture his sheep. When he came back, he closed the entrance to the cave with a giant rock so we could not get out.
Strangers, who are you and where do you come from?
We are from Troy, blown off course by shifting gales on the Great South Sea. It was our luck to come here. Have a care for the gods' courtesy.
Then the Cyclops took two of my men in his hands and ate them. I had the sudden urge to kill Polyphemus, but then I realized that if I did, we perished there as well, for we could never move his giant door slab aside.
Should I kill him?... No, then we can't escape
After I had gotten Polyphemus drunk by giving him the wine I had brought, I found an olive tree, which I cut down to make it a spear. I then worked with my men and together we stuck the pointed end in the giant's eye, causing him to become blind.
As soon as he realized that he was blind, he shouted in agony to his fellow Cyclopes. I had told Polyphemus my name was Nohbdy.
What man has tricked you, ruined you?
Nohbdy's ruined me!
Well if nobody has tricked you, we will get back to our sleep. Pray to your father Poseidon.
I did not know how to escape from the Cyclops, but I came up with a plan to hide under the rams' bellies. When the sheep would go out to the pasture, we would go out with them.
