  • Exposition
  • "A second later the announcements begin. 'Good morning, North Orchard students and faculty. Can I please have everyone's attention?' Vice Principal Graham. There's something strange in his tone. I sit up and listen. 'It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I must deliver some very sad news. A member of the North Orchard High community passed away over break.' ... 'Junior Delia Cole passed away yesterday.'" (4).
  • Rising Action
  • "'She didn't kill herself, June.' Jeremiah leans forward. 'Delia was murdered.'" (35).
  • Climax
  • "I'm placed facedown on a cold flat surface. The floor of a van, maybe. ... Part of the bag is lifted from my head. ... 'If you want to find out what happened to Delia, don't struggle.'" (161).
  • June comes back from winter break to find out that her best friend, Delia, who she once told everything, committed suicide. It came over the loudspeaker at school and she later heard rumors that Delia burned herself to death in her stepdad's shed.
  • Falling Action
  • While visiting Delia's old favorite spot, June runs into Delia's exboyfriend who tells her that Delia didn't kill herself and that she was murdered.  June doesn't know what to believe so she wants to find out the truth for herself.
  • Resolution
  • "'Dear Delia, When you died, part of me died too. Now I'm finishing off the rest, so we can be together.'" (325).
  • While June was exploring the alleged scene of Delia's suicide she was thrown into a trunk with a bag on her head and is on the way to find out more about the death of Delia.
  • After the most nerve-racking car ride of June's life, she is taken to Delia's new house. Delia is alive and explains to June why she ran away and restarted her life. Her stepdad had raped her and her mom didn't believe it.
  • "'So I sat down with my mom and told her everything that had happened the night before.' ... 'She said I couldn't act that way anymore, or they were going to have to think seriously about sending me away.' ... 'I knew then that I had to get out.'" (181).
  • Jeremiah dies in a fatal car crash. After mourning her ex-boyfriend, Delia makes an offer that shocks June. She asks June to kill her. June refuses but agrees to kill herself with Delia. June wrote her suicide note to sound like she killed herself because Delia did a while back. When they really committed suicide together.
